![]() Fooled AgainHow the Right Stole the 2004 Election and Why They'll Steal the Next One Too (Unless We Stop Them)by Mark Crispin Miller Oct 17, 2005
DescriptionFor Republicans, the 2004 presidential election was little short of miraculous: Behind in the Electoral College tally in the days leading up to the election, behind even on the very afternoon of the vote, the Bush ticket staged a stunning comeback. The exit polls, usually so reliable, turned out to be wrong by an unprecedented 5 percent in the swing states. Conservatives argued-and the media agreed-that "moral values" had made the difference. In his new book renowned critic and political commentator Mark Crispin Miller argues that it wasn't moral values that swung the election-it was theft. While the greatest body of evidence comes from the key state of Ohio-where the Democratic staff of the House Judiciary Committee found an extraordinary onslaught of Republican-engineered vote suppression, election-day irregularities, old-fashioned intimidation tactics, and illegal counting procedures-similar practices (and occasionally worse ones) were applied in Florida, Oregon, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, and even New York. A huge array of anomalies, improper practices, and blatant violations of the law all, by a truly remarkable coincidence, happened to swing in the Bush ticket's favor. This pattern-not one overwhelming fraud but thousands of little ones-is, in Miller's view, the new Republican electoral strategy. This incendiary new book presents massive documentation that the election was stolen and describes the mind-set, among both the major parties and the media, that could permit it to happen again. ReviewsMark Crispin Millers Fooled Again is a jeremiad aimed at the heart of the national Republican machine. But its also a work of original reporting that in the end amounts to a solid case for Republican theft of the 2004 presidential election . . . Fooled Again may well describe the endgame that leads to sing-party dominance through the next generation. Did the right steal the 2004 presidential election? Of course they did; it's all there in the title of Mark Crispin Miller's book Fooled Again: How the Right Stole the 2004 Election & Why They'll Steal the Next One Too (Unless We Stop Them). The name reads like a soundbite (albeit a long one), but readers who tackle the 364-page tome will be stunned by a blizzard of information supporting the thesis. . . You may feel bludgeoned by the facts, but Miller is clearly trying to make the book spin-proof; you can gauge his success by not only who reads it, but also who ignores it. "A fascinating catalogue of impeachable offenses and prosecutable crimes. "[Mark Crispin Miller] gathers enough well-documented evidence that anyone who cares about fair play should find this book revelatory." Although this conclusion is controversial, the book is a wake-up call for election reform. "Miller has done his homework, and his sources are numerous and scrupulously footnoted. He comes close to convincing an open-minded reader that the 2004 election was a gigantic fraud. His exhortation to Democrats 'not to milk it for partisan advantage but to use it to promote, and realize, electoral reform is the book's stated purpose, and Miller does make a strong case for reform. . . Miller's call for electoral reform becomes an urgent clarion call to all Americans, one that should not be ignored. Fooled Again is a must-read for anybody concerned about the health and preservation of our democracy. Selling TerritoryWorld Excluding UK & Commonwealth |
